Michael G. Pravica

Associate Professor
Michael Pravica is an associate professor of physics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and a member of the High Pressure Science and Engineering Center (HiPSEC) there. He obtained his B.S. degrees in physics and applied mathematics (with honors) from Caltech and earned his A.M and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. At Caltech, he discovered the ALTADENA effect. His research interests involve the study of organic materials (including explosives) and inorganic materials under extreme conditions of pressure, temperature, and ionizing radiation. Prof. Pravica is also passionate about communicating the importance of science to the public and is active in promoting science and education in the mainstream media. He received the CSUN Student Government 2013 Faculty Excellence award and the UNLV College of Science Distinguished Teacher Award. In 2013 he was awarded honorary membership in the Serbian Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences along with their Nikola Tesla medal in part due to his extensive efforts to promote and popularize the Serbian-American inventor, Nikola Tesla.
