William Happer is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics at Princeton University. He invented the sodium guidestar that is used in astronomical adaptive optics to correct for the degrading effects of atmospheric turbulence. He served as Director of Energy Research in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) from 1991 to 1993. His office supported most of the non-weapons-related basic research of the DOE, including the first few years of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program for climate science. He is a member of many scientific societies, including the National Academy of Sciences.
